MÉRIDA, YUCATÁN – A Spanish expat residing in Mérida, Yucatán, has sparked online discussion by addressing a common question she receives: "Why do Europeans smell bad?" In a recent video, the woman, known as claudiaishere, shared her perspective on the cultural and physiological factors contributing to this perception. According to the expat, one significant reason is differing bathing habits. She noted that, in her experience, many Europeans do not bathe daily, with some even showering only once a week. While she personally maintains daily hygiene, she observed this trend among people she knows. Another factor she highlighted is a perceived difference in body chemistry. She suggested that Europeans might have a more acidic body pH or a naturally stronger body odor compared to Mexicans. She claimed that Mexican skin, in her observation, does not develop a noticeable odor even after a day or two without bathing. Finally, the expat pointed to the efficacy of deodorants. She stated that deodorants sold in Mexico appear to contain much stronger chemicals than those she used in Spain. She recounted that a common deodorant brand she used in Spain would wear off by the afternoon, whereas the same brand purchased in Mexico provides long-lasting protection, even in Yucatán's hot and humid climate, where one is constantly sweating. She concluded by asking viewers to refrain from asking Europeans this question, as it can be somewhat bothersome.
