Lisbon, Portugal - Travelers driving into Portugal are being urged to exercise caution regarding the country's electronic toll system, which can lead to unexpected fines if not properly understood. A recent viral video highlights the common pitfalls and provides crucial advice for foreign drivers. Portugal operates two main types of tolls: traditional booths where drivers can pay manually, and electronic gantries. The latter automatically registers vehicle license plates, and there are no physical payment points at these locations. Many drivers, especially tourists, unknowingly pass through these electronic tolls, accumulating charges without immediate notification. According to the video, the recommended procedure for foreign vehicles is to pass through the electronic toll as usual, allowing the license plate to be registered. Within approximately 48 hours, drivers must visit a CTT (Correios de Portugal) office, the national post service, to inquire about and pay any accumulated toll charges associated with their vehicle's license plate. Failure to pay within 15 days will result in the debt being transferred to the finance department, potentially leading to significantly higher penalties. This information is vital for international visitors to ensure a smooth and penalty-free journey through Portugal's road network.
