Andalusian Schools Adjust Schedules to Beat the Heat
Andalusian Schools Adjust Schedules Due to Extreme Heat Schools in Andalusia, Spain, are adapting their schedules to cope with the extreme heatwave affecting the region. According to guidelines issued in May 2023 by the Consejería de Desarrollo Educativo, schools have the autonomy to adjust their daily schedules to better suit students' needs during periods of exceptional high temperatures. "This measure allows for a degree of flexibility in the school day," explained a spokesperson for the Consejería de Desarrollo Educativo. "The goal is to ensure the well-being of students during extreme heat." The adjustment allows for an earlier dismissal time, but this early dismissal cannot take place before 12 pm. Any changes to the schedule must be communicated to parents and guardians in advance. The flexibility is in place between June 1st and July 31st, and again from September 1st to 30th. This ensures children are not exposed to excessive heat during peak hours. This proactive approach by Andalusian schools demonstrates a commitment to student well-being and highlights the importance of adapting educational practices to address climate change challenges.
