Madrid Tackles Airport Homelessness with Joint Census Initiative
Madrid Mayor and AENA Partner to Help Homeless at Barajas Airport Madrid, Spain – In a collaborative effort to address the growing issue of homelessness, Madrid's Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and AENA, the operator of Spain's airports, have announced a joint initiative to conduct a census of homeless individuals residing at Madrid-Barajas Airport. The census aims to identify those in need and provide them with essential social services and support. "We have reached an agreement," stated Mayor Almeida in a press conference shown in the video, "to overcome our differences and find common ground to solve this truly important issue." The initiative underscores the commitment of both the city and AENA to tackling social challenges affecting vulnerable populations. AENA will reportedly cover the costs of the census. Municipal social services will continue to support the 105 individuals already identified as needing assistance. This collaboration marks a significant step towards providing comprehensive support for the homeless community at the airport and sets a positive example of inter-agency cooperation in addressing social issues within a major transportation hub. The census is expected to provide a clearer picture of the needs of the homeless population at the airport, enabling more targeted and effective assistance programs in the future.
