Sarawak Aims to Revolutionize Hydrogen Production with Drastic Cost Cuts
Sarawak's Premier Announces Ambitious Plan to Slash Hydrogen Production Costs Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a significant announcement at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit 2025, Sarawak's Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, revealed the state's ambitious plan to drastically reduce the cost of hydrogen production. Currently, producing one kilogram of hydrogen in Sarawak costs 30 kilowatt-hours of energy. However, the Premier expressed confidence that this can be reduced to a mere 10 kilowatt-hours per kilogram by 2030. This projection is based on the state's Post-COVID-19 Development Plan (PCDS 2030). "This is not a pipe dream," said Premier Abang Johari, emphasizing the plan's feasibility. "We've already started experimenting with new membrane technology in collaboration with PETRONAS and a Japanese firm, and we've seen promising results." The Premier further explained that Sarawak plans to leverage its abundant natural resources, such as water and natural gas, to achieve this cost reduction and accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy. The announcement underscores Sarawak's proactive approach to sustainable development and its increasing role in the global green energy sector. The Premier's confidence and the state's collaboration with international partners signal a positive outlook for Sarawak's future economic growth and environmental sustainability.
