Malaysia's April Trade Booms: RM219.4 Billion in Trade, but Regional Disparities Emerge
Malaysia's April Trade Soars to RM219.4 Billion: Penang Leads the Way, While Other States Face Export Challenges Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Malaysia's trade performance in April 2025 showcased a robust RM219.4 billion total, according to the Chief Statistician of Malaysia, Datuk Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin. This surge was largely attributed to the impressive export growth observed across seven key states. These states collectively contributed a substantial RM219.4 billion to the nation's overall trade. Penang emerged as the leading contributor, with exports reaching RM51.5 billion, representing a significant 36.7% share of the national export total. "Penang continues to be a major player in our export sector," noted Datuk Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin. Other states that significantly contributed to the positive trade figures include Johor and Selangor. However, the report also highlighted a contrasting trend. Several other states experienced a decline in exports during the same period. These include Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Sarawak, Kedah, Kelantan, Labuan, and Sabah. The reasons behind these declines require further investigation to understand the underlying economic factors at play. The overall positive trade figures for April 2025 paint a promising picture for Malaysia's economy, despite regional variations. Further analysis is needed to understand the specific factors influencing the growth in some states and the decline in others. This will provide valuable insights for policymakers to support sustainable economic growth across all regions of Malaysia.
