Philippines welcomes back Interpol fugitive Arnolfo Teves after Timor-Leste deportation
The assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo in March 2023 sent shockwaves through the Philippines. The prime suspect, former congressman Arnolfo Teves, evaded capture for over a year, finding refuge in Timor-Leste. However, his time on the run ended when Timor-Leste deported him back to the Philippines on May 30th, 2025. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed the news, stating in a short video, "It's time for the accused to face justice." This follows a court battle in Timor-Leste which initially blocked Teves' extradition. The video shows Teves' arrival in the Philippines, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Degamo's death, which also claimed the lives of nine others, occurred at his home in Pamplona. Witnesses described six armed individuals in military uniforms opening fire. This event highlights the ongoing challenges of political violence and the pursuit of justice in the Philippines. The successful deportation of Teves marks a significant step towards accountability.
