Sarawak's Green Energy Strategy: A Southeast Asian Leader Emerges
Sarawak's Clean Energy Push: State Aims for Southeast Asia Leadership Sarawak, a state in Malaysia, is making a significant push to become a leader in clean energy in Southeast Asia. This ambition was highlighted at the 2025 Energy Export Conference (EEC) held in Aberdeen, United Kingdom. The state's Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni, presented Sarawak's energy plans, emphasizing the state's commitment to sustainable development. "Sarawak is committed to strengthening its position as a clean energy leader in Southeast Asia," stated Datuk Dr. Hipni. He outlined a four-pronged strategy: renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen. This integrated approach is designed not only to meet Sarawak's own energy needs but also to position the state as a major exporter of clean energy solutions. Sarawak's current energy mix is already heavily reliant on hydropower, with over 70% of its electricity generated from this renewable source. The state's plans include expanding renewable energy capacity in the coming years, further solidifying its commitment to clean energy. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition to more sustainable energy sources. Sarawak's participation in the EEC demonstrates its proactive role in shaping the future of clean energy in the region and beyond.
