Sarawak's Feedlot Innovation: A Solution to High Meat Prices?
Sarawak's innovative feedlot system is poised to revolutionize the state's meat industry. This initiative, launched by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Lubok Antu, leverages palm oil waste to create a cost-effective and nutritious feed for livestock. This strategic move is expected to boost local meat production, reduce reliance on expensive Australian imports, and stabilize meat prices. The system, employing bio-digested palm oil waste and additional nutrients, aims to produce higher-quality meat. "This step is seen as capable of increasing local meat output, thus reducing dependence on expensive Australian imported cattle due to its export tax, as well as losses through foreign exchange," said the Premier. The average beef price in Sarawak, currently at RM64 per kilogram, is significantly higher than in other states. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges in meat production and affordability.
