China's Green Wave: Protecting Coastlines on World Oceans Day
China's Coastal Conservation Efforts: Mangrove Restoration and Coral Reef Protection On World Oceans Day, China highlighted its commitment to environmental protection by showcasing significant initiatives in coastal ecosystem restoration. The country is focusing on two key areas: mangrove forests and coral reefs. In Hainan province, the National Dongzhai Gang Nature Reserve has planted over 130 hectares of mangroves as part of an intensive restoration program. This year, the province aims to expand this effort by adding another 2,000 hectares. A local official stated, "We are not only protecting the coast, but also providing a home for thousands of marine species." Meanwhile, in Fujian province, researchers from the Third Institute of Oceanography, under the Ministry of Natural Resources, launched a systematic coral reef restoration project in the Dongshan waters. This project uses a combination of asexual breeding and the transplantation of coral fragments to damaged reefs. Zhou Xujie, a researcher involved in the project, explained, "We conduct regular maintenance and monitoring to assess the growth and recovery of the coral colonies." These combined efforts demonstrate China's dedication to marine conservation and enhancing coastal biodiversity for long-term sustainability.
