Antarctic Ice Core Holds 2-Million-Year Climate Secrets
Australia Receives Antarctic Ice Core: A 2-Million-Year Climate History Project. A 150-meter ice core, a significant milestone in climate research, has been transported 1200 kilometers from Australia's Casey research station to a field camp called Dome C North. The journey, undertaken by a team of ten, including scientists and support staff, faced challenges due to blizzard conditions and COVID-19 delays. 'It was really a very special moment,' said Dr. Joel Pedro of the Australian Antarctic Program, reflecting on the years of planning and effort. Chris Gallagher, also from the AAP, noted some days they only managed 30 kilometers due to the harsh weather. The core will allow scientists to study climate change over two million years. Future plans include drilling to a depth of 400 meters. This project represents a significant step towards deepening our understanding of Earth's climate history.
