Spanish Foundation Offers Affordable Housing for Seniors, Combating Housing Crisis and Loneliness
Badalona, Spain: A Non-Profit Foundation Provides Affordable Housing for Seniors In Badalona, Spain, a housing crisis disproportionately affects the elderly. Many struggle to afford rent on their pensions. However, a non-profit foundation, Llars Horitzó, offers a solution. They provide affordable rooms in a shared building to 17 independent seniors. Each resident has a private room and bathroom, and they share a communal kitchen and dining area. Rent is capped at 30% of their pension. "It's not a nursing home; it's like student housing for older people," says Juan, a 79-year-old resident. He appreciates the affordable rent and the companionship of other residents. Luisa, 76, adds, "If you pay 200 euros for rent, food, clothes, and shoes...it doesn't stretch." The program ensures dignity and independence while addressing the rising cost of living. This initiative provides a model for other communities facing similar challenges, offering both affordable housing and a sense of community for seniors.
