SCOTUS Ruling Leaves Thousands of Venezuelan Immigrants in Chicago in Limbo
The Supreme Court's decision on deportation protections has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the lives of thousands of Venezuelan immigrants residing in Chicago. Approximately 50,000 individuals, many of whom have established themselves in the community, now face the potential threat of deportation. "In reality, we live in desperation. I don't know if it will happen, but when you go out, you see a strange car behind you," said one Venezuelan man, who works full-time and volunteers, too afraid to share his name. Rocío Becerril, an immigration attorney, explained that the loss of work permits will severely impact the ability of these immigrants to maintain their livelihoods and support their families. Many of these individuals have mortgages and car payments, making deportation a devastating prospect. Despite the fear, many remain hopeful, clinging to the possibility of a better future in the United States.
