NYC Crypto Kidnapping: Investor's Torture Ordeal Ends in Suspects' Arrest
New York City: Cryptocurrency Investor Kidnapped, Tortured for Bitcoin Password; Second Suspect Surrenders A 32-year-old cryptocurrency investor, William Duplessy, was allegedly kidnapped and brutally tortured for nearly three weeks in a Manhattan townhouse. The ordeal ended when Duplessy managed a daring escape while his captors were retrieving his laptop. He was able to flag down a nearby officer, barefoot and bleeding. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident. 37-year-old John Waltz was arrested Friday, found barefoot and in a bathrobe in the townhouse. Another suspect, whose name has not been released, surrendered to police earlier this morning. "They took my passport, tied me up, and demanded my Bitcoin password," Duplessy told authorities. "When I refused, they shocked me with electric wires, beat me with a firearm, and dangled me over a ledge, threatening to kill me." Waltz is charged with kidnapping, assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. He is being held without bail. Duplessy was hospitalized with injuries consistent with his account of the attack. Both suspects' lawyers are not commenting at this time. The case underscores the potential dangers associated with cryptocurrency investments and the lengths to which criminals will go to obtain access to digital assets. The successful escape of the victim and the arrests of the suspects offer a glimmer of hope in this disturbing case.
