Justice Demanded: Australia Protests After Aboriginal Man's Death in Custody
Protests Erupt Across Australia After Death of Aboriginal Man in Custody Brisbane, Sydney, and Perth witnessed widespread protests following the death of 24-year-old Kumanjayi White, an Aboriginal man who died in police custody in the Northern Territory last month. The demonstrations highlight the ongoing concerns about police brutality and the treatment of Indigenous Australians. Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves, Kumanjayi's grandfather, expressed his grief and anger in an interview with ABC News Breakfast, stating, "Losing my jaja was something very special." He emphasized the need for accountability from both the NT police and the government. Mr. Hargraves also shared his grandson's aspirations: "He was just learning things and culture and white man's society. He was good at doing things." The protests underscore the deep-seated frustration within Aboriginal communities and their allies regarding systemic issues and the demand for meaningful change and justice for Kumanjayi White.
