Spain's Economic Crisis: Cofidis Report Reveals Dire State of Family Finances
Spain's Economic Squeeze: Cofidis Observatory Reveals Growing Financial Strain on Families MADRID, June 13, 2025 – A new report from the Cofidis Spain 2025 Sustainable Home Economics Observatory paints a concerning picture of the financial health of Spanish families. The study reveals that a growing percentage of the population is struggling to make ends meet, with far-reaching consequences. The observatory's data shows a stark reality: 27.8% of the population now identifies as lower or lower-middle class, a three-percentage-point increase from 2024. This means more families are living with less than €2,000 per month. "This increase is alarming," says Angela Velert, an expert involved in the study. "It indicates a growing economic divide and the increasing difficulty for many families to maintain a decent standard of living." Further exacerbating the problem, the report finds that more than half of a family's income is typically spent on rent, leaving little room for savings or unexpected expenses. One in five families report being unable to save any money, and a concerning 16% rely on financial assistance from others to survive. The study's impact extends beyond personal finances. The rising cost of living is forcing families to cut back on leisure activities, clothing, and cultural events. In response, there's a growing trend towards purchasing more national products. The Cofidis Observatory's findings serve as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for policies to address the widening economic gap and support struggling families in Spain.
