US Tornado Season Surges: 1,000+ Preliminary Reports Exceed Historical Average
The United States experienced an unusually active tornado season in 2025, with over 1,000 preliminary reports by the end of May, far surpassing the historical average of 782. This surge in tornado activity has prompted concerns among meteorologists and emergency officials. Texas was the hardest-hit state, recording 109 preliminary tornado reports. Other states significantly impacted include Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi, all exceeding 100 reports. However, not all states experienced this increase. Iowa, for instance, saw a dramatic decrease in tornado reports, from over 100 in 2024 to only 11 in 2025. In contrast, Mississippi witnessed a sharp rise, jumping from 11 reports in 2024 to 100 in 2025. "2025 may have slipped to the fourth most active year in the past 15, but that's still far from normal," AccuWeather reported. While tornado season typically peaks around May 25th, the possibility of fall outbreaks remains a concern. This unusual activity highlights the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the importance of preparedness.
