Ghanaian Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Mining: Eight Excavators Seized in Ankobra River Operation A major anti-galamsey operation in Ghana's Western Region resulted in the seizure of significant mining equipment and weapons from illegal operators. On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, a joint task force, including the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, and other security forces, confiscated eight excavators, seven pump-action guns, 66 cartridges, and four mobile phones. Additionally, several water pumps and shelters belonging to the illegal miners were destroyed. "The most important challenges have been logistics," stated Brigadier General Musa Waziri (Retired), the Western Region National Security Liaison Officer. Despite these challenges, he vowed to ensure the Ankobra River returns to its normal state and that the operation would continue. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, known as 'galamsey,' which causes significant environmental damage in Ghana. The success of this operation offers a glimmer of hope in the fight to protect the country's natural resources.
