Ghanaian Politician Chairman Wontumi Arrested Amidst Money Laundering Allegations
Accra, Ghana – May 28, 2025. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested on Tuesday by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO). The arrest followed questioning at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters. While EOCO hasn't released details, legal analyst Martin Kpebu suggests a possible link to money laundering related to Akonta Mining Company, allegedly connected to Wontumi. The arrest triggered protests by NPP supporters outside EOCO, prompting military intervention to maintain order. Wontumi was later hospitalized, suspending further interrogation. The situation is evolving and raising political tensions. "This arrest is a significant development with potential ramifications for Ghanaian politics," stated Kpebu in a recent interview. The investigation continues.
