Arehucas, Gran Canaria – A recent visit to the historic Arehucas rum factory in Gran Canaria provided an in-depth look into the intricate process of rum production, a cornerstone of the island's heritage. Visitors embarked on a guided tour, starting with the expansive barrel cellar, home to over 4,000 oak barrels, some adorned with special designs honoring historical figures and artists. The tour meticulously explained each stage of rum creation, from the initial fermentation of sugarcane molasses, where it slowly transforms into alcohol, to the precise distillation process that separates vapors to achieve the finest rum. Following distillation, the rum is left to age for years in oak barrels, acquiring its distinctive color, aroma, and flavor. A highlight of the visit was the tasting session, where participants sampled a diverse range of rums and liqueurs. Offerings included the classic Carta de Oro, alongside unique flavors such as honey, coffee, and banana. Reactions during the tasting were noted to be lively and humorous, adding a memorable dimension to the experience. The factory also showcased special carnival edition bottles and a boutique where visitors could purchase their favorite rums.
