A silent threat is reportedly spreading across the United States, as Chagas disease, once considered a tropical illness, is now officially endemic in 32 states. Public health advocate AliTMoresco recently highlighted the urgent need for awareness, stating, "Most healthcare professionals will not know the acute symptoms or to test you for this parasite. You must educate yourself and be your own best advocate!" The disease, caused by the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite transmitted by the 'kissing bug,' can remain dormant for decades before manifesting as severe heart or digestive complications. Acute symptoms, which can mimic Lyme disease, include fever, fatigue, rash, and notably, swelling of the eyelids, known as Romaña’s sign. Experts warn that over 300,000 Americans may already be infected, with fewer than 2% aware of their condition. Prevention tips include sealing home cracks and checking pets for the parasite, as the 'kissing bug' does not recognize state lines.
