US Immigration Policy: 3,000 Arrests Daily, 1 Million Deportations Yearly?
The Trump administration's immigration policy has set a goal of 3,000 non-citizen arrests per day in an effort to deport 1 million people annually. Nayna Gupta of the American Immigration Council says this is a 'lofty goal' that is proving difficult to achieve due to the limited number of non-citizens who would traditionally be considered for deportation. "In order to meet the numbers that they've set as a goal, and in an act of desperation, they are engaging in these sweeping raids in communities to rack up their numbers of arrests," Gupta explains. These actions, she says, "instill fear" and portray the US in a negative light internationally. The administration's approach raises concerns about its impact on immigrant communities and its overall effectiveness.
