Esto es lo que se sabe sobre el nuevo formato del Documento Nacional de Identidad
Madrid, Spain – Effective April 1, 2025, Spain has officially launched the digital version of its National Identity Document (DNI), a move set to modernize identification processes across the country. This initiative, established by Royal Decree 255/2025, allows citizens to carry and present their DNI digitally via their mobile devices. Alfonso Muñoz, an official from the National Social Security Institute (INSS), explained the key features of this new digital identity. "One of the main advantages of the digital DNI is that individuals will be able to identify themselves without the need to present the physical DNI," Muñoz stated. He demonstrated how this would work, showing a QR code on a smartphone screen that contains the user's identifying data. However, Muñoz clarified that while the digital DNI is now available, public administrations, including Social Security centers, have a transitional period of 12 months to acquire and implement the necessary devices capable of reading these digital QR codes. During this period, citizens may still be required to present their physical DNI for certain procedures until all administrative offices are fully equipped. This phased implementation aims to ensure a smooth transition for both citizens and government agencies.
