Travelers Warned: Expert Tips to Avoid Bed Bugs After Vacation. A recent online video by travel enthusiast Aly Kima has sparked discussion among travelers, highlighting the often-overlooked risk of bringing bed bugs home from trips. Kima shared her personal "nightmare" experience of encountering bed bugs after a stay in a five-star hotel, emphasizing that luxury accommodations do not guarantee immunity from these pests. "Imagine coming home from your dream vacation to an absolute nightmare," Kima stated in her video, recounting her ordeal. "I stayed in a five-star hotel and I came home with bed bugs." Drawing on advice from a pest control professional, Kima outlined three critical steps for travelers. First, she advised against placing suitcases on any soft surfaces, such as beds or couches, upon entering a hotel room. Instead, luggage should be kept on hard surfaces like coffee tables, desks, or even in the bathroom. "No suitcases on soft surfaces," she stressed. "It never touches the bed, mine was on a couch, no couch." Secondly, Kima warned that bed bugs are attracted to human scent and carbon dioxide. Therefore, any clothes intended for re-wearing during a trip should be stored separately in a closet or drawer, rather than being returned to luggage. This prevents bed bugs from being drawn into bags. Finally, upon returning home, Kima strongly recommended washing and drying all travel clothing on high heat, regardless of whether the items were worn. "When you get home, you wash everything," she urged. "I don't care if you didn't wear it... You bring it home, you wash it, you dry it, high heat if possible." The video serves as a timely reminder for travelers to implement preventative measures against bed bug infestations.
