High-Visibility Vests Hide Lima's Cell Phone Thieves
Two Cell Phone Snatchings in Lima Highlight Security Concerns Lima, Peru – Security concerns are rising in Lima after two separate incidents of cell phone snatching were reported in the districts of Breña and San Borja. Both incidents involved motorcycle-riding thieves who wore high-visibility vests, making them appear as delivery drivers or other legitimate motorcyclists. In Breña, security camera footage shows a thief on a motorcycle approaching a mother pushing a baby stroller across a pedestrian crossing. The thief quickly snatched the woman's cell phone and sped away. "It happened so fast," said a nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous. "She was so shocked, she almost dropped the stroller." Another similar incident occurred in San Borja, where a woman standing outside a building had her phone stolen by a similarly attired thief on a motorcycle. These incidents have raised concerns among residents about the effectiveness of measures designed to improve the safety of motorcyclists. The use of high-visibility vests by the thieves is a clear indication of how easily criminals can exploit regulations meant to improve safety. Authorities are investigating both incidents and urging citizens to remain vigilant.
