A veterinarian has released the third installment of a video series addressing common errors made by dog owners, offering insights into improving pet care. The expert, known as Amir Anwary, highlighted three critical areas: inconsistent training, neglecting dental hygiene, and overlooking potential symptoms of illness. Anwary stressed the importance of consistent training, stating, "Dogs have the mind of a two-year-old child. You can't chop and change when something's okay and when it's not based on your mood." He explained that such inconsistency can lead to behavioral issues and anxiety in dogs, advocating for clear and unwavering rules. Regarding dental care, the veterinarian noted a prevalent issue: "Dogs coming in with terrible, terrible teeth, severe gingivitis, having to have multiple extractions. It's almost so common that it's laughable." He urged owners to be proactive, suggesting dental powders or VOHC-accredited treats if daily brushing is not possible, emphasizing that brushing remains the 'gold standard.' Finally, Anwary warned against dismissing unusual behaviors as normal. He provided examples such as an older dog suddenly struggling on walks, which could indicate congestive heart failure, or a dog constantly licking its paws, potentially a sign of allergies or arthritis. "Don't dismiss a symptom for normal behavior," he advised. "If you see your dog doing something that could be weird, Google it! We love it, as long as you get to a vet clinic after that." He encouraged owners to research symptoms and seek professional veterinary advice rather than ignoring potential health issues.
