High Maintenance Costs Plague Luxury SUV Owners, Expert Warns. Toledo, Spain – Owning a luxury SUV like a Land Rover can come with unforeseen financial burdens, according to automotive expert Ángel Gaitán. In a recent video, Gaitán highlighted the common and often costly issues associated with these high-end vehicles, particularly when purchased second-hand. He demonstrated a Land Rover Discovery suffering from a significant parasitic current draw, which was draining its battery even when the car was off. Gaitán explained that the vehicle was consuming up to 5 amperes for an extended period, an abnormal rate indicating an electrical fault. Beyond the battery drain, the car also presented a power steering fluid leak and issues with its particulate filter and EGR valve. "If we have to intervene to change an EGR, we practically have to remove the engine," Gaitán stated, underscoring the complexity and expense of such repairs. He warned that the cost of these interventions could easily surpass the vehicle's initial purchase price. The mechanic advised potential buyers to be acutely aware of these potential expenses. While acknowledging the luxury and comfort offered by Land Rovers, he stressed that "maintenance can be very, very, very costly." Gaitán also shared a diagnostic tip for owners experiencing similar battery drain issues, suggesting the systematic disconnection of fuses from various modules using an amperimetric clamp to identify the source of the parasitic draw. This method, he noted, helps avoid a "needle in a haystack" search among the car's numerous control units. The expert's insights serve as a crucial heads-up for anyone considering a luxury used car, urging them to factor in long-term maintenance expenses.
