Madrid, Spain – A recent incident involving a Volkswagen owner has sparked a discussion on consumer rights and the critical importance of written documentation in automotive maintenance. Alex, a customer with a Volkswagen maintenance plan covering up to 150,000 kilometers, sought to change his car's timing belt at an official dealership. However, he was met with conflicting information and alleged incompetence from the service staff. According to Alex, the dealership initially informed him that his vehicle had a timing chain, not a belt, suggesting no replacement was necessary. Later, they reportedly referenced a maintenance schedule for a different engine type (a 2.0L diesel from a Tiguan) when discussing his 1.6L engine. It was Alex, the customer, who had to point out these discrepancies, having researched his car's specific maintenance requirements. Mechanic Ángel Gaitan, who shared Alex's story, emphasized the dangers of relying solely on verbal assurances. "Words are carried away by the wind," Gaitan stated, quoting a Spanish singer. He highlighted that without written proof of service requests or complaints, customers have little to no legal standing if problems arise later. Alex had previously reported steering issues at 50,000 km, but without formal written complaints, these issues remain unresolved and unrecorded by the dealership. Gaitan stressed that official repair orders must accurately reflect all customer concerns and service requests. "Everything you say has to be here, and you have to take a copy of this," he advised, holding up a repair order. This incident serves as a stark reminder for all car owners to meticulously document all interactions and services with dealerships to safeguard their investments and ensure proper vehicle maintenance.
