A common concern among car owners regarding oil consumption in certain engine models has been addressed by automotive expert Ángel Gaitan. In a recent demonstration, Gaitan showcased a 2015 Renault Captur that began experiencing significant oil consumption at just 37,000 kilometers, despite being purchased with a low mileage of 18,000 km. Gaitan explained that oil was found in areas typically reserved for air circulation, such as the turbo tube and the admission manifold. He also pointed out visible rust on the spark plugs, indicating moisture exposure. According to Gaitan, these issues are linked to a known design characteristic in Renault engines produced up to 2018, which can lead to oil filtration and subsequent consumption. "These engines generate low pressure in the admission manifold, allowing oil to filter through and be consumed," Gaitan stated. He also suggested that the rust on the spark plugs was likely due to improper cleaning of the engine bay, possibly with a pressure washer, by a previous owner or seller. While acknowledging the design flaw, Gaitan assured that the problem is manageable. "The positive side is that if you consistently maintain the oil at the correct level, you won't damage the engine," he advised. His recommendations include a comprehensive service, replacing spark plugs and filters, and a slight increase in oil viscosity, provided it remains within the manufacturer's approved specifications for the engine type and climate. This approach aims to reduce oil consumption and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
