Madrid, Spain – A recent investigation by automotive experts at GT Automoción has uncovered a significant case of odometer fraud involving a white Mercedes van. The discrepancy, revealed through advanced diagnostic tools, highlights the risks associated with purchasing used vehicles without proper inspection. According to Ángel Gaitan, a specialist from GT Automoción, the van's dashboard displayed a mileage of 162,572 kilometers. However, a detailed examination of the vehicle's internal service memory, which stores historical data across various modules, showed a recorded mileage of 295,998 kilometers. This substantial difference indicates that the odometer had been tampered with. Gaitan explained that when an instrument cluster is legitimately replaced in a vehicle, the new unit is designed to adopt the highest mileage recorded in any of the car's electronic control modules. "If the mileage on the dashboard is significantly lower than what's stored internally, it's a clear red flag for manipulation," Gaitan stated. This incident serves as a crucial reminder for potential used car buyers to seek professional vehicle appraisals to verify mileage and ensure transparency in transactions. GT Automoción, which also offers training courses in vehicle appraisal, emphasizes the importance of thorough inspections to prevent consumers from falling victim to such fraudulent practices.
