Panama's Social Security Reform: Progress or Problem?
Panama's Law 462: Imperfect but a Step Forward, Says Deputy Bloise Panama City – Deputy Jorge Bloise, speaking on the television program "Radar," offered a nuanced assessment of Law 462, the recent reform to the country’s Social Security Fund (Caja de Seguro Social). While acknowledging the law's imperfections, Bloise highlighted its importance as a step towards improvement. "No es una ley perfecta, tiene mucho por mejorar," he stated, translating to "It's not a perfect law, it has much room for improvement." The law includes a provision for review in six years, allowing for adjustments based on the nation's evolving needs. Bloise emphasized the importance of continuous legislative progress, even if initial expectations aren't fully met. Beyond the law itself, Bloise identified a more profound issue: "Aparte de la crisis nacional, hay una gran crisis de desconfianza en las autoridades," he commented, meaning "Aside from the national crisis, there's a great crisis of distrust in the authorities." This reflects widespread public dissatisfaction with the government and its handling of various issues. The comments underscore the need for greater transparency and accountability from the government to rebuild public trust. The planned review of Law 462 offers an opportunity to address these concerns and improve the system for the benefit of all Panamanians.
