Deadly Heat and Strict Measures Cast Shadow Over Hajj Pilgrimage
Millions of Muslims gather in Mecca for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, a significant event in Islam. This year, however, the pilgrimage is overshadowed by concerns about extreme heat. Last year's Hajj resulted in a tragic toll, with over 1300 pilgrims losing their lives due to extreme heat, and more than 2700 suffering from heatstroke. Baraa Anwar, a reporter for The Associated Press, reports that authorities are implementing strict measures to prevent a repeat of last year's tragedy. The government has already turned away nearly 270,000 people without the necessary permits. 'The government says last year's deaths were linked to unauthorized pilgrims,' Anwar reports. This year, fines, deportations, and bans are being enforced, even against Saudi citizens and residents. Authorities say the crackdown is about protecting lives. Despite the challenges, the spirit of faith and devotion remains strong among the pilgrims.
