AGUA PRIETA, SONORA – Gilberto Arvayo Álvarez, known as "Esculthor" from Cananea, Sonora, captivated attendees at the Ba-Chicui Festival of the Arts 2025 with his remarkable sculptures crafted entirely from recycled metal and discarded objects. Arvayo, a resident of Cananea, expressed gratitude for the invitation to showcase his work in Agua Prieta, noting the positive reception his art previously received at a museum in Cananea. During an interview, Arvayo explained his artistic process: "I don't make anything from scratch; everything is assembled. You can see they are pliers, engine parts, and so on. It's simply about finding the right place for them to create figures." He highlighted that from a distance, his sculptures don't appear to be made from tools, but upon closer inspection, the recycled components become evident. Arvayo shared his inspiration, particularly from movies, and revealed plans to create sculptures of Predator, Darth Vader, and even Batman. He also mentioned incorporating animal bones into some of his pieces, such as dinosaurs and triceratops, to give them form. He emphasized the importance of giving a second life to discarded items. When asked about advice for young aspiring artists, Arvayo encouraged them to pursue their own ideas and even adapt existing ones. He recounted an experience where he provided a bucket of scrap metal to primary and secondary students, asking them to find figures like ducks or birds. He noted that some students indeed found creative ideas, underscoring that art is inherent in everyone, depending on how one chooses to express it. "Each thing is different," he concluded, stressing the unique techniques required for various art forms.
