Rabies Case in Valencia ICU: Urgent Warning After African Dog Bite
Rabies Case Highlights Urgent Need for Awareness: Valencia Man Hospitalized After Dog Bite in Africa A Valencia man is currently hospitalized in the ICU after contracting rabies, a severe viral disease, following a dog bite during a trip to Africa. This case, reported by À Punt Mèdia, underscores the importance of rabies awareness and preventative measures. Esperanza Montaner, director of the CEU Veterinary Clinic, interviewed by À Punt Mèdia, stated, "The main transmission source is a bite, primarily." She explained that while rabies cases are rare in mainland Spain, they are more prevalent in Ceuta and Melilla, and that a recent case was reported in Melilla. Dr. Montaner emphasized the seriousness of the disease, describing symptoms in humans as including malaise, headache, and fever, progressing to neurological symptoms like aggression and paralysis. She stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after any animal bite, particularly from dogs, due to their close contact with humans. "99% of human infections are through dog bites," she noted. This case serves as a stark reminder of the global threat of rabies and the need for continued vigilance and preventative measures, such as vaccination, to protect both humans and animals.
