Venice Biennale 2025: British Pavilion Showcases Repair as a Path to Architectural Futures
Venice Architecture Biennale 2025: Repair as a Tool for Architectural Futures The Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 is underway, and one of the most talked about pavilions is the British Pavilion. ArchDaily recently interviewed the curators, Kathryn Yusoff and Kabage Karanja, gaining unique insights into their work. The exhibition, titled "GBR - Geology of Britannic Repair," focuses on the concept of repair as a means to address the complex legacies of colonialism and climate change in architecture. "So we wanted to take this site that obviously represented the UK, and think about the collaboration both within the building and the kind of wider geographies of colonialism," explained Yusoff. Karanja added, "And tying on to what Kathryn said, we are looking at the geological contexts of ecological degradation, colonial extraction, but thinking about the repair; thinking about ways and means we can actually shift the dynamic, shift the discourse towards a more collaborative focus to rebuild and refocus." The pavilion itself is a striking example of this approach, using innovative materials and design to represent the intertwined histories and challenges facing the UK and beyond. The curators' vision offers a hopeful message about the potential for architecture to play a role in environmental and social repair.
