Panama Cracks Down on Pig Farms Polluting Azuero Rivers
Panama's President Takes Action Against River Pollution in Azuero Azuero, Panama – President Jose Raul Mulino recently addressed the alarming levels of pollution affecting the La Villa and Estibaná rivers in Panama's Azuero region. During a press conference, Mulino expressed deep concern over the environmental damage, directly accusing pig farms operating near the rivers as the primary culprits. He stated, "These companies will be sanctioned accordingly. We will not allow them to continue harming public health and the environment." The president's announcement signals a strong commitment to environmental protection. The Ministry of Environment has already initiated a technical inspection covering 20 kilometers of the La Villa river and 19 kilometers of the Estibaná river, identifying 23 critical pollution points. Eleven farms are already facing administrative proceedings, and further inspections are planned. The government is imposing fines of up to \$10,000 and will temporarily shut down farms until necessary improvements are made to prevent further contamination. This decisive action is a positive step towards safeguarding the Azuero region's environment and the health of its inhabitants.
