Weight-Loss Injections: Contraception Concerns and MHRA Guidance
Concerns grow over the safety of weight-loss injections and their effect on contraception. Women are being urged to take precautions after reports that the popular 'skinny jabs' can affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued new guidance advising women to use additional contraception while taking the injections, and for a period afterwards before trying for a baby. 'Women should use contraception whilst taking the jabs and for a certain period afterwards before trying to get pregnant,' said an MHRA spokesperson. 'Two months for Wegovy and Ozempic, and one month for Mounjaro.' The MHRA also advises women using Mounjaro with oral contraceptives to use condoms for the first four weeks or switch to a coil or implant. The warning highlights the importance of seeking medical advice before starting any weight-loss treatment and the need for women to be aware of the potential side effects.
