Intimacy Coordinators Implement "Timeout" Protocol for On-Set Erections Dublin, Ireland – The role of intimacy coordinators in film and television has become increasingly vital, not only for ensuring consent and comfort during sensitive scenes but also for navigating unexpected physiological responses. A recent discussion with an intimacy coordinator shed light on how production teams address instances where male performers experience an erection on set. According to the expert, who appeared in a segment from BBC Sounds' "Fame Under Fire," an erection during an intimate scene is a natural, physiological response. "It's natural. It's normal. Our physiology and our physiognomy is that, you know, if two people are moving together in a sexual manner, that someone might become aroused. It's just how the body responds," she explained. However, the professional environment of a film set or stage necessitates a clear protocol. "It's not suitable to have an erection in the workplace and when we're on set or on stage. It's our place of work," she stated. To manage such situations, intimacy coordinators facilitate an open dialogue with the cast. "First of all, we now talk about it openly, saying, 'You know, this might happen, but if it does, this is what we do.' And what we do is we put in place a timeout," the coordinator detailed. This involves actors agreeing on a specific "safe word" beforehand. "We invite the cast to think of a word that they agree to together. It might be 'burgers' if someone's, you know, desperate for a burger at the end of filming. It might be 'Wakanda' or whatever it is," she added, with a lighthearted chuckle. The use of a safe word allows for an immediate pause in filming, ensuring the actor can regain composure and the professional atmosphere is maintained. The implementation of such protocols underscores the evolving standards in the entertainment industry, prioritizing performer well-being and professional conduct in intimate scenes.
