
Belarus' Central Election Commission Celebrates 35 Years, Prepares for Presidential Elections
MINSK, BELARUS – December 5, 2024 – The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus marked its 35th anniversary yesterday. This event coincided with preparations for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for January 26, 2025. The CEC, a significant institution in Belarusian politics, has overseen over 30 electoral campaigns since Belarus' independence. Lidia Yermoshina, a former CEC chair, noted the evolution of the Belarusian electoral system since 1989, emphasizing its role in shaping the country's future. Igor Karpenko, current CEC chair, highlighted the extensive network of election officials involved (around 70,000) and their commitment to ensuring fair and transparent elections. Mikhail Myasnikovich, former Prime Minister, praised the CEC's international reputation and its role in strengthening Belarus' sovereignty. The CEC has already begun accrediting international observers from the CIS for the upcoming presidential elections.
