Online Banking Under Threat: Phishing Scams Lead to Significant Financial Losses. Budapest, Hungary – A recent incident has brought to light the increasing sophistication of online phishing scams, with one individual reportedly losing nearly 1 million Forints (approximately 2,500 EUR) through a deceptive scheme. The scam, detailed in a recent report by Blikk in collaboration with Erste Bank, involved a seller on an online marketplace who was targeted via email. According to the report, the victim received an email disguised as a package delivery notification, prompting them to click a link. This link led to a fraudulent interface closely resembling their legitimate online banking portal. Unaware of the deception, the individual entered their credentials and subsequently, the verification codes sent to their phone, believing they were completing a necessary step for the package delivery. Shortly after, the fraudsters withdrew the substantial sum from the victim's account at a Budapest ATM. Anna Kósa, Head of Erste Compliance, stressed the importance of vigilance in an interview. "It is better to be safe than sorry," Kósa stated. "If we notice anything suspicious on our account, be it a transfer or a card transaction, we must immediately contact our bank. Call us." She further explained that in cases of misuse, banks can often act swiftly. "If it was a misuse, the bank can immediately take action to ensure these amounts are recovered. In the case of suspicious card transactions, a refund process is initiated, and for transfers, a recall might still recover the amount." To prevent falling victim to such scams, experts advise several key precautions. Users should always meticulously check the addresses of any links before clicking them. It is crucial to use only official banking applications or websites for any financial transactions and never to input personal or banking data on unfamiliar or suspicious-looking pages. "If anything seems suspicious, log out immediately and notify the bank," the report emphasized. "A false alarm is always better than losing your assets." The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of online fraud and the need for constant caution.
