Expert Arborist Reveals Hidden Danger to Trees: The 'Mulch Volcano' A local arborist, Bobby Solar, recently demonstrated a critical tree care procedure: girdling root pruning and volcano mulch mound restoration. The process, documented in a recent video, highlights a common landscaping error that can severely damage or even kill mature trees. Mr. Solar explained that piling excessive mulch around the base of a tree, often referred to as "volcano mulching," can lead to the formation of girdling roots. These roots grow around the tree's trunk, effectively strangling it and preventing the proper flow of water and nutrients. "Too much mulch on the root collar causes girdling roots," Solar stated in his video, adding that "girdling roots will KILL the tree overtime. Just look at your local Lowe's or shopping center..." Using specialized tools, including an Ingersoll Rand air compressor and a Dewalt reciprocating saw, Solar meticulously removed the thick layer of mulch and soil from around an October Glory Red Maple. This exposed the tree's root collar and the problematic girdling roots, which he then carefully pruned. The video showcased a dramatic transformation of the tree's base, moving from an overgrown "mulch volcano" to a properly mulched area with exposed root flare. Solar emphasized the importance of correct planting depth, quoting his college professor, "Plant them (the root collar) high, they'll never die. Plant them low, they're sure to go (die)." He concluded by demonstrating the correct application of a thin, two-inch layer of organic woodchip mulch, allowing the tree to breathe and thrive.
