Hungary's Pioneering Female Paramedic, Rózsika néni, Reflects on a Life of Service and ResilienceAt 92 and a half years old, Rózsika néni, one of the first six women to become a paramedic in Hungary during the 1950s, recently shared her extraordinary life story. Her journey began at a time when women in such physically demanding roles were unheard of, a testament to her strength and determination.Rózsika néni vividly recalled the rigorous nature of her work. "They chose six girls who were strong and could handle the work, and could carry people," she stated, emphasizing the physical challenges. She recounted instances of carrying patients on stretchers up to the sixth floor via winding staircases, as elevators were not commonplace. Her shifts were intense, often lasting 24 hours, from 7 AM one day to 7 AM the next. Despite the arduous conditions, she expressed a profound love for her profession, highlighting her dedication to helping others. However, her pioneering career was cut short when, a few years later, new regulations were introduced prohibiting women from performing heavy physical labor. This policy change forced Rózsika néni to leave the ambulance service, a decision that undoubtedly left a lasting impact.Today, Rózsika néni leads a quieter life, enjoying knitting and reading. Yet, her spirit of wisdom and experience remains vibrant. She offered a poignant message to the younger generation: "Work with integrity, save money, and make something of your life." When asked about the secret to her remarkable longevity, she smiled, admitting, "If I knew, I would tell everyone. It's just a coincidence that I reached 92 and a half." Her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the invaluable contributions of pioneers.
