Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage talks her latest album, relationship with Davido, performance at King Charles' coronation, and the future of Afropop
New York, NY Nigerian music superstar Davido recently opened up about his relationship with fellow artist Tiwa Savage during an appearance on The Breakfast Club. Addressing past rumors and disagreements, Davido clarified that he views Tiwa Savage as a "big sister," emphasizing the familial nature of their bond. "That's my sister, man, she cool," Davido stated, explaining that any past arguments were akin to those between siblings and "nothing" serious. He further elaborated on the personal nature of their past dispute, which he linked to a custody battle concerning his first daughter. "The situation with Tiwa was, you know, it was like kind of personal," he shared. "She's very, very good friends with the mom of my daughter, my first daughter, which we were in court having custody and stuff like that. So I just felt like, you know what I'm saying, you my, you know what I'm saying, help me, help me, you know, see my daughter, that type stuff. So we just got in a little argument, it was nothing." Davido confirmed that Tiwa Savage has since reached out, indicating a potential reconciliation. "I haven't seen her since then, to be honest," he admitted, "but she did reach out, and you know what I'm saying, so probably if it happens, it happens, no bad blood. I love her, you know, I love her child, and I saw him grow up. She's an amazing person, she changed the game for females, you know what I'm saying. She'll always have that respect, you know, that's my sister, like. I would never let nothing happen to her. She knows." The artist also discussed his public image, contrasting his approachable demeanor with the more guarded personas of other industry figures like Wizkid or Burna Boy. "People know me as the outgoing guy, very free," Davido explained. "I don't have that mystique or that rebel, you know what I'm saying, I can't act that way. I'm just me." He added that while some advise him to be less accessible as a superstar, he believes his authentic approach has been key to his success. "What's worked for me is worked for me, and what's worked for them, you know, is worked for them."
