Mother Advocates for Change After Son's Octopus Encounter at San Antonio Aquarium

San Antonio, TX – A local mother, Britney Taryn, is spearheading a movement for improved animal welfare at the San Antonio Aquarium following an incident where an octopus clung to her son, leaving him with suction marks. The incident, which garnered significant public attention, prompted Taryn to speak out about the aquarium's practices and her commitment to advocating for the animals. Taryn shared her experience, stating, "The child was left with suction marks that lasted about a week." She expressed concern over the aquarium's dismissive response, noting that staff referred to the marks as "hickeys" and provided no documentation regarding the octopus's suitability for public interaction. In her public statements, Taryn acknowledged the initial encounter was not malicious but highlighted it as a public safety concern. She emphasized her newfound awareness of the octopus's strength and venomous beak, which she was not fully informed about prior to the incident. The San Antonio Aquarium has faced scrutiny in the past. According to state records, the former owner, Ammon Covino, was convicted in 2013 for illegally harvesting marine animals. Additionally, USDA reports indicate "non-critical" citations against the aquarium, including issues with animal care and a porcupine's death after escaping its enclosure. Taryn and her son are now advocating for the relocation of the octopus to a safer institution. She plans to collaborate with animal activist organizations and local lawmakers to enhance sea life protection. "I just want people to be more aware of what’s going on," Taryn stated. "If people stop going there and if people stop supporting it, I mean, it’s going to dry up on its own."
