Ghana's Looming Plastic Crisis: Activists Urge Immediate Action on Landfill Pollution
Accra, Ghana – Environmental activists from the "Buz Stop Boys" group have issued a stark warning about the escalating plastic pollution crisis in Ghana, following their recent cleanup efforts at a major landfill site. The group, known for its volunteer-driven initiatives for a clean and green environment, collaborated with the Ghana Armed Forces to collect waste, transporting it to the extensive dumping ground. The video, filmed at the landfill, captures the overwhelming scale of plastic waste, with mountains of refuse stretching as far as the eye can see, encroaching on nearby residential areas and a body of water. The lead activist, speaking directly from the site, underscored the dire consequences of unchecked plastic consumption and inadequate recycling. "This is what plastics are doing to our environment," he stated, pointing to the vast expanse of garbage. "If you thought the plastic conversation is some sort of a game, this video will give you a new perspective." He highlighted that Accra alone has over 20 such landfills, some in even worse condition. The activist stressed the urgent need for "active recycling" to prevent plastic waste from ending up in landfills and oceans. "It is time to understand that you can never survive without this planet," he urged, calling on every citizen, leader, parent, and student to do everything in their power to end the "disease of environmental pollution." The group's efforts aim to raise awareness and galvanize collective action against the growing environmental threat.
