ANPC Head Piedone Warns Romanians Against Misleading 'Sibiu Cheese' Products
Bucharest, Romania – Cristian Popescu Piedone, head of the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC), has issued a stark warning to Romanian consumers regarding the authenticity of certain food products. In a recent interview, Piedone highlighted 'Sibiu cheese' as a prime example of a product frequently misrepresented in the market. "After all the checks we've done across the country, there's one food item I would never buy again: Sibiu cheese," stated Piedone. He elaborated on the issue, explaining that while 'Sibiu cheese' is a recognized brand, many products sold under this name are not genuinely produced in Sibiu or made from traditional ingredients. "We have a brand, Sibiu cheese, but which one is actually from Sibiu? They only have 300 sheep, I'm giving you an example, there are five shepherds, and everyone sells Sibiu cheese," he added, implying a significant disparity between production capacity and market supply. Piedone emphasized that the deception lies in consumers purchasing products believing them to be authentic, when in reality, they may be made from powdered milk or contain various additives. "This is consumer deception," he asserted. "You go and you don't realize it, you just hear the brand. You go and say, 'Look, I saw Sibiu cheese, I bought it.' It's not the real thing. I'm not saying it's inedible or something bad happens, but it's not original. This, as I said, is consumer deception." The ANPC head urged consumers to be more vigilant and informed about the origin and composition of the food they buy, particularly those marketed with strong regional or traditional labels.
