Indigenous Leaders Outraged: Shut Out of Crucial First Ministers’ Meeting
First Nations Chiefs Express Outrage Over Exclusion from First Ministers’ Meeting in Saskatoon Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – June 3, 2025 – First Nations chiefs expressed deep concern and frustration today over their exclusion from the recent first ministers’ meeting held in Saskatoon. The meeting addressed crucial issues including internal trade, tariffs, pipelines, and major resource projects, all of which directly impact Indigenous treaty and constitutional rights. "These are all critical matters that directly impact our inherent treaty rights and constitutional rights," stated Dutch Lerat, Second Vice-chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, in an interview with CBC News. "Any conversation about internal trade, tariffs, pipelines, or major projects must include our First Nations." Lerat emphasized the importance of Indigenous participation in decisions affecting their lands, waters, and resources. Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the concerns raised by the First Nations leaders and stated that there would be a consultation process with respect to the bill and any project moving forward. A meeting is planned for mid-July in Winnipeg to discuss these issues further. The exclusion of First Nations from this critical meeting highlights the ongoing need for meaningful Indigenous participation in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives and future.
