ICE Arrests Bronx Student, Sparking Protests in Lower Manhattan
Protests and Arrests Mark Immigration Court Demonstration in Lower Manhattan A demonstration outside the federal immigration court in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of nearly two dozen protesters. The event followed the detention of Dylan, a 20-year-old Venezuelan asylum seeker and Bronx public school student, by ICE during his court hearing. The protest, captured on video, showed clashes between protesters and law enforcement. "People say, 'Oh, let them come in legally,'" said one witness, "but when they try to come in legally and follow court proceedings, they're being kidnapped." The video also includes interviews with a witness who described seeing numerous plainclothes ICE agents and Naveed Hasan, a parent on the city's Board of Ed, who reported receiving numerous calls from worried immigrant parents. City policy requires ICE to present a signed judicial warrant before entering school property, a policy City Hall says has never been violated under the current administration. The incident underscores the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and their impact on immigrant communities in New York City. The school is working with Dylan's family to support them.
