Minimum Wage Hike in Dominican Republic: Concerns Over Rising Prices for Essential Goods
Recent minimum wage increases in the Dominican Republic have sparked concerns among businesses about potential price hikes for essential goods. The National Council of Commerce in Provisions (CNCP) reported that while prices have remained stable so far, there is concern that this may change. "Even with the increase, we've seen no changes in prices," said Alberto Alejo Rodriguez, president of CNCP. However, Rodriguez acknowledged the significant financial impact on businesses, particularly those employing thousands of workers. The CNCP is also advocating for targeted aid distribution through the Supérate program, focusing on small businesses and colmados to mitigate the impact on consumers. These concerns were raised during the sixth Expo Provisiones 2025, highlighting the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation. The event aims to create opportunities for Dominican businesses. The council's recommendations offer a pathway to ensure that the benefits of minimum wage increases reach the intended recipients while minimizing negative economic consequences.
