Police Brutality Allegations in Hato Mayor Spark Outrage
Family in Hato Mayor Accuses Police of Torture A family in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic, is accusing police officers of torturing their 20-year-old relative, Darling Enrique Mercedes, after his arrest on Friday, May 30, 2025. Family members showed graphic images of injuries, including bruises and welts across his back and feet. They claim the young man was returning from a vacation when he was apprehended. "They put a bag over his head, beat him with boots, and shocked him with electricity," said Mercedes’ grandmother, adding that her grandson was terrified of the police because of a previous incident. Mercedes’ mother, who works at a local hotel where Mercedes also worked, provided documentation to prove his employment and lack of criminal history. "My son only works; he had no reason to be treated this way," she stated. The family is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation by the National Police Director General, Ramón Guzmán Peralta, to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents of alleged police brutality. The video has generated significant public attention, highlighting concerns about police conduct in the region.
